Manchester Arena bomb mother and campaigner stars in special podcast episode as anniversary approaches

Heard Storytelling, which launched its eponymous podcast earlier this year, is releasing a special episode today (May 7) as the anniversary of the Manchester Arena bombing approaches on May 22.

Each Heard Storytelling episode features a storyteller who shares their personal journey, and in this episode the storyteller is Figen Murray, mother of Martyn Hett, who lost his life in the terror attack in 2017.

Following the devastating loss of her son seven years ago, Murray has dedicated her life to promoting peace, kindness, and tolerance in Martyn’s memory, and is the driving force behind Martyn’s Law, a legislation which will require venues with a capacity of 100+ to improve security against the threat of terrorism.

Having campaigned tirelessly for Martyn’s Law since 2019, today marks the beginning of Murray’s walk from Manchester to Downing Street, starting at the arena where the bombing took place and finishing at Downing Street, where she will hand deliver a letter about the proposed legislation to the prime minister on the seventh anniversary of the arena terrorist attack.

Colette Burroughs-Rose, co-founder of Heard Storytelling, said: “We are releasing this special episode of the Heard Storytelling podcast today to spotlight Figen Murray’s tireless work on public safety and her advocacy for Martyn’s Law, which was born from her personal tragedy and a commitment to prevent such losses for others.

“Figen shares her experience as a mother who has faced immense loss and how she has turned her grief into action, focusing on educating young people about the risks of radicalisation and the importance of kindness. Her story is a call to action for all of us.”
