Radio Yorkshire to relaunch as Proper Sport

Proper Sport

Leeds-based online radio station Radio Yorkshire will relaunch as Proper Sport on Thursday.

The station, which was launched by former Leeds United chairman Ken Bates and used to have exclusive rights to commentary of the team’s games, will merge with the digital brand it launched in July 2016.

A podcast network will also be launched, with Castleford Tigers’ Ollie Holmes, former England footballer Carlton Palmer and Ryan Wilson of the Pigeon Detectives joining.

The focus will continue to be music and sport, with the station continuing to broadcast rugby league commentary.

Head of broadcasting Sam Brydges said “This move puts sport right at the heart of our brand and allows us to attract more listeners and viewers to the platform both in Yorkshire and beyond.  If you love sport and great music then Proper Sport is the station is for you.

“We’ve always taken a multi-platform approach to delivering our content with Proper Sport set to become a unique product in the marketplace, particularly with the new Proper Sport website being extremely audio and video friendly.”

He added that there are plans for more offshoots of the Proper Sport brand in 2018. Radio Yorkshire went online only in November 2017.
