Manchester’s Red Production Company has reported pre-tax profits of £3.4m for 2021, up from £1.1m in 2020 and the highest total since the £3.7m it achieved in 2016.

Red, which is the maker of TV shows such as It’s a Sin, Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax, also reported that turnover increased from £5.4m to £7.5m in 2021 in its latest report to Companies House.

Red is owned by the French production giant StudioCanal, and has other shows in its portfolio include the topical Years and Years, The Stranger and Casanova.

A statement signed off by the board said: “The directors expect to continue the development of the company’s business by producing television programmes that have a strong local and international appeal as well as benefitting from group synergies such as the international distribution channels.”
