The Women’s World Cup semi-final between England and USA on BBC One was watched by a peak TV audience of 11.7 million, making it the most watched programme of the year so far.
Phil Neville’s team were beaten 2-1 by the world’s number one team to exit the tournament. The match had a peak audience share of 50.8%.
Going into the tournament, the previous record TV audience for a women’s match had been four million, for England’s Euro 2017 semi-final against the Netherlands.
That was broken in their opening Women’s World Cup match against Scotland, with 6.1m viewers, and was beaten in subsequent matches before the huge 11.7m peak for the game against USA.
