BBC “secures rights” for biggest match in Sunday League history

Sheffield will play host to Royal Oak v Nags Head in what’s being dubbed the biggest match in Sunday league history.

The Steve Bracknell’s Royal Oak has become a social media sensation and his podcast Game’s Gone: The Steve Bracknall Podcast has aired on BBC Sounds and YouTube since 2025.

Known online as the assistant manager of the club, he’s built a following of more than a million fans across social media – mostly thanks to his viral team talks and behind the scenes antics.

The club will take on Nags Head in the Sheffield Imperial Cup Quarter‑Final, which will be played on Easter Sunday at Sheffield FC.

It’ll be available to watch live at 2pm on 5th April on The Steve Bracknall Podcast YouTube channel, with BBC Radio Sheffield’s Adam Oxley and Lee Turnbull providing full commentary, with build‑up and post‑match analysis.

“The subscriber numbers have been positive and the scale of interest around this match makes it important that supporters have open access to the coverage. I wish both teams the best of luck,” stated Jonathan Wall, Director of BBC Sounds.

Radio coverage will also be available on BBC Radio Sheffield.

“This is the biggest game in Sunday league history. Whilst on the surface it’s two rival teams battling it out for a place in the Sunday Imperial Cup semi-finals, it’s also a celebration of the grassroots game in this country,” added Bracknall.

“The match sold out to members within hours leaving many fans disappointed. Everyone at the club is overjoyed at the BBC’s decision to stream the game via the Game’s Gone YouTube channel and play it out on BBC Radio Sheffield. This means fans from all over the world can tune in and enjoy the match and hopefully witness Royal Oak cause the biggest cup upset in recent history. We remain together as one.”

BBC Radio Sheffield sports journalist, commentator and Football Heaven podcast presenter, Adam Oxley, said:

“I’ve commentated on some historic local matches in my time at BBC Radio Sheffield, not to mention my fair share of steel-city derbies between the blades and the owls…Blue ‘n’ white v Red ‘n’ white…I’ve seen friends and families divided come derby day. But I’ve never known a footballing story or rivalry like this one. It’s unique to say the least. It’s got everything, drama, betrayal and Sunday League football. What more could you want? It is going to be an experience reporting on this game.”
