Clive Myrie on life beyond the BBC News at Ten: Wine, Mastermind gossip and why he doesn’t own a TV

Boltonian newsreader and TV presenter Clive Myrie has offered a glimpse into life away from the BBC News at Ten, revealing why he doesn’t watch the news after work, prefers streaming from a laptop in bed and once sparked a viral moment by sharing behind-the-scenes Mastermind gossip over a glass of wine.

The 61-year-old broadcaster, who has spent almost four decades on screen, told The Times that he deliberately avoids bringing television into his home life.

“If I’m presenting the News at Ten, I finish at 10.35pm, get home by 11pm and I’m in bed by 11.15pm. If Catherine’s up, we’ll have a quick glass of wine and then watch something like Two Weeks in August in bed,” he said. “We don’t have TVs around the house, they suck the energy out of a room, so we’ll watch it on a laptop and be asleep by 12.30am.”

Despite fronting some of the BBC’s flagship news programmes, Myrie also revealed that he doesn’t spend his downtime watching the news.

Instead, he said he prefers news documentaries and listening to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and other current affairs shows.

The comments came in The Times’ “A Life In the Day” feature, offering an insight into how one of Britain’s best-known news presenters switches off after work.

Myrie joined the BBC as a trainee local radio reporter in 1987 before becoming a television reporter on regional programme BBC Points West. He has since become one of the corporation’s most recognisable faces, presenting the BBC News at Six and News at Ten as well as hosting Mastermind and Celebrity Mastermind.

Away from the newsroom, Myrie has also shown a lighter side. Earlier this year, his appearance on Saturday Kitchen went viral after he revealed behind-the-scenes gossip from Mastermind following a glass of wine.

“The winner last season, and one of the finalists, they… got it on!” he told viewers, prompting widespread reaction on social media.

One viewer wrote on X: “I can imagine a night out, or at least a couple of drinks, with Myrie would be a right laugh.”

Myrie is not the only television personality to have spoken about avoiding televisions at home. Claudia Winkleman has previously said she has no TVs in her house, while singer Paloma Faith and former EastEnders actor Bobby Brazier have also spoken publicly about not watching television.
