First images as Diane Morgan and Sue Johnston team up for Ann Droid

The first images of Diane Morgan as Ann Droid, an AI robot carer have been released today.

Morgan stars alongside Sue Johnston in the new comedy, which is set to air on the BBC this summer.

Written by Morgan and Sarah Kendall (Frayed, The Other One), the six-part series is made by Boffola Pictures and Witchcraft Industries.

It will star Sue Johnston (True Love, The Royle Family) who plays Sue and Paul Ready (Motherland) as her son Michael.

Sue’s husband David, passed away 18 months ago and her only son is moving out, but he’s bought his mother a surprise to help her live independently – a second hand AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot (Morgan).

The “overly attentive, socially inept pain in the arse” is her worst nightmare, despite being built to “keep the ageing population company and monitor their health, taking the pressure off the ever-stretched NHS.”

It’s described as a buddy comedy “between an older woman and her robot who isn’t quite as advanced socially as she is technically.”

The executive producers are Shane Allen, Diane Morgan and Pippa Brown, who is also series producing. The series is directed by Joe Roberts (Power of Parker).

BBC Studios, which has a minority investment stake in Boffola Pictures, will handle global sales.
