BBC and Netflix revive Philomena Cunk with new series taking aim at cinema

Diane Morgan and Charlie Brooker are reuniting for another instalment in their critically acclaimed faux documentary series – this time turning its attention to the world’s obsession with film.

Made by Pacesetter Productions, Cunk on Cinema will see the return of the Bolton ‘documentary-maker’ for what is described as her “most glamorous series to date”.

Production has begun this week on the three-part series, which will explore the history of cinema – from the invention of the camera through to 1960s New Wave filmmaking, and on to CGI and the future role of AI.

Along the way, Cunk (Diane Morgan) will once again interrogate experts with her unique line of questioning, attempting to unpack the origins and purpose of cinema while reflecting on her own big questions: where did it come from, why does it exist, and “what does it want?”

Philomena Cunk said: “Cinema has given the world some of the most profound, memorable and moving visual moments in its unswerving depiction of the human condition: the shower scene in Psycho, Death playing chess in that Swedish thing, and Tom Selleck’s glistening moustache in Three Men And A Little Lady, to name but all three of the only examples I can think of at the moment. There will, unfortunately, be some bits in black and white, but we’ll keep that to the barest minimum.”

Charlie Brooker added: “Now that Sora has killed off Hollywood and itself (presumably as part of a murder-suicide pact), it’s the perfect time to look back at two hundred centuries of cinema, in the company of an idiot we’re apparently cursed to employ: Philomena Cunk.”

Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC, said: “Philomena Cunk is back! As our leading intrepid documentary filmmaker, who better to investigate the world of cinema? This series follows in the hugely successful footsteps of other Cunk projects, so we can’t wait to see what she unearths this time around. A huge thank you to the incredibly talented team at Pacesetter, Diane and Charlie for bringing Philomena back onto our screens.”

Cunk On Cinema (3 x 30’) is a Pacesetter Production for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two. It was commissioned by Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy.

The show is written by Charlie Brooker, who also serves as executive producer alongside Diane Morgan and Sam Ward. Al Campbell directs, with Jessica Rhoades as executive producer and Mark Kinsella as co-executive producer for Pacesetter Productions. Navi Lamba is the BBC’s commissioning editor.

The series will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two, and will also be available on Netflix outside of the UK and Ireland.
