William Hill backs Manchester indie in new media gamble

Gambling giant William Hill has appointed independent media agency Notorious Communications to its media buying and planning account without a pitch, according to reports.

The account had been held by Wavemaker for the past two years, after it won a four-way pitch against Zenith, iProspect and PHD in 2023. At the time, the account was estimated to be worth £37m in media billings, making up the lion’s share of parent company Evoke’s (formerly 888 Holdings) portfolio.

Though Wavemaker did not take part in the latest process, Campaign reports that its split with the gambling brand has been amicable. Evoke, WPP Media and Notorious Communications all declined to comment when approached by the trade title.

William Hill appointed WPP agency T&P to handle its creative in 2024. The agency’s most recent campaign for the brand, Final one standing, launched in August.

Notorious Communications – formerly known as Love Sugar Science – is based in Manchester and was originally backed by Goodstuff through its £1m Startstuff growth drive. As part of that relationship, the agency used Goodstuff’s G-Force service for media buying.

In 2024, following its rebrand, Notorious parted ways with Goodstuff and appointed Cath Offord to take its buying in-house.
