Coronation Street is in for some big changes this year.
Just last week, insiders confirmed a reduction in the weekly output of its flagship soap and a host of stars are set to leave the cobbles this year.
Producer Kate Brooks, who was brought in last year from a rival, recently warned: “There are a few exits this year, and some unexpected ones that will send shockwaves. People might not expect the exits, but there are a few.”
Several cast members, including Maureen Lipman (Evelyn Plummer) and Kate Ford (Tracy McDonald) are also reportedly being moved to ‘guest contracts’ and there have been reports of ITV reportedly axing funding for the annual Christmas party, leaving both on-screen and off-screen staff disgruntled after what has been described as a ‘challenging year’.
But who exactly is leaving Coronation Street this year? Here’s what we know…
Sue Devaney (Debbie Webster)
Debbie Webster’s upcoming exit is set to be one of the most emotional storylines of the year. The feisty businesswoman will be written out as part of a heartbreaking dementia storyline. A show source told Metro: “It’s one of the biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline.”
While fans will be gutted to see her go, they can expect a powerhouse performance from Devaney, who has been a fan favourite.
Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw)
After 25 years of sarcasm, no-nonsense, and dramatic storylines, Eileen Grimshaw is also departing Corrie. Sue Cleaver, who has been a cornerstone of the show since 2000, confirmed: “The door is still firmly open, but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures, and live fearlessly.”
Her departure will mark a major shake-up for the Grimshaw household, and while fans may hope for a future return, Eileen’s presence will be missed.
Colson Smith (Craig Tinker)
Craig Tinker has been patrolling the Corrie streets for 14 years, but his time as Weatherfield’s resident police officer is coming to an end.
Reflecting on his departure, Smith wrote: “I’ve loved every single second of my 14-year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street.”
Craig’s exit storyline remains under wraps, but Smith’s journey is far from over as he prepares for his next chapter.
Charlotte Jordan (Daisy Midgeley)
After four explosive years, Charlotte Jordan is also set to bow out as Daisy Midgeley. Though details of her exit remain secret, the storyline is expected to be dramatic.
Jordan shared: “After a brilliant four years for Daisy, it’s time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities.”
With Daisy at the heart of some of the show’s most gripping plots in recent years, her departure is sure to shake up Weatherfield.
Shelley King (Yasmeen Metcalfe)
After a decade in the role, Shelley King has already filmed her final scenes as Yasmeen Metcalfe. Thankfully, the character won’t be killed off, leaving the door open for a possible return.
A show insider said: “Shelley is an accomplished stage and television actress, and we fully understand her desire to take her career in another direction after 10 years playing the same role.”
Her final episode is expected to air soon, marking the end of an era for the much-loved character.
Paddy Bever (Max Turner)
Max Turner’s turbulent time in Weatherfield is drawing to a close this spring. Paddy Bever, who has played the character since 2021, said his goodbyes after much reflection.
“It’s been a great privilege to contribute to the legacy of such a well-loved and iconic show. This chapter has been unforgettable, and while I look forward to what lies ahead, I will treasure these memories.”
With six major departures, Coronation Street is heading for a significant reshuffle. While fans will be heartbroken to see these beloved faces go, their legacies on the cobbles are sure to live on.
