Sofia Coppola takes to Chanel’s Instagram with stylish Mancunian montage ahead of Métiers d’Art Show Manchester

Chanel is pulling out the big guns ahead of its Métiers d’Art Show, which takes place in Manchester for the first time on Thursday.

The French fashion behemoth has turned to no less of a talent than Oscar winner Sofia Coppola for a new film hyping up the event on social media, posting a montage tribute to the city by the Lost in Translation director to Instagram ahead of the much-anticipated event.

The film is a dizzying journey through Manchester cultural icons past and present with Ian Curtis, LS Lowry, John Cooper Clarke, Manchester United and the original Factory club among the many Mancunian icons referenced in the clip.

Chanel commented alongside the film: “Creative dialogue is at the heart of every CHANEL Métiers d’art collection. It lies within the work between Artistic Director of the Fashion collections Virginie Viard, the ateliers at rue Cambon, the Maisons d’art at 𝘭𝘦19M, and connects artists and friends of the House, cities and cultures, season after season.

CHANEL has chosen to present the 2023/24 Métiers d’art show in Manchester, one of the most effervescent cities of pop culture and an avant-garde one, whose bands, spanning all genres, have changed the history of music.

Montage by Sofia Coppola.”

The brand added that “The film of the show will be revealed on Friday, December 8th 2023 at 9am Manchester time, 10am Paris time.”

Meanwhile, over at lifestyle website Manchester’s Finest they’ve taken to LinkedIn to show off their coveted, Peter Saville-designed (who else?) invitation to the show, along with the ubiquitous goodie bag containing “an issue of Chanel’s own Chaos magazine filled with nods to Manchester, as well as a cashmere scarf emblazoned with the legendary CC of Chanel and MCR on it.”

There’s also a collector vinyl record in the bag, the Finest Team tell us, created as a tribute to Manchester’s musical influence, with the cover art again designed by Saville.
