Sheffield tops the table as Northern cities dominate student experience university table

Sheffield has been named as the the UK’s best city for students in a new study which places Northern cities conclusively at he top of the table for overall student experience,

87% of Sheffield graduates rated their university experience positively, while undergrads in Sunderland pay £480 for rent and can go out for just £50, making it one of the most affordable cities for students.

Prestigious universities like Oxford and Cambridge don’t guarantee the best student experience, with both ranking near the bottom for campus life.

The May 2026 study by Edumentors examined 40 UK cities to find which ones offer the best university life. The report tracked monthly rent rates from SpareRoom’s data, crime rates from government records, and entertainment costs. It also looked at how easy it is to get around and what students think of their teaching based on the National Student Survey. Each city received scores from 0 to 100 across all, with higher points meaning a better student experience.

The complete research findings are available here, but your top five in a nutshell are:

  • 1 Sheffield

Monthly rent: £520

Crime rate: 85 per 1K residents

Entertainment costs: £58 monthly

Student satisfaction: 87%

Final score: 74.8/100

Sheffield is the best city for students in Britain. Undergrads here can find dorm rooms and shared flats for around £500, about £300 less than what students pay in Oxford or Cambridge. Teaching quality is also good, with nearly 9 out of 10 students saying they’re happy with their courses at the University of Sheffield, the city’s top-ranked school. Plus, the city stays safer than nearby Manchester or Birmingham, two other major student hubs in the region.

  • 2 Sunderland

Sunderland comes second, even though most people have never heard of its university. The University of Sunderland doesn’t rank as high as others (300+), but 87% of its graduates still say they were happy about their student life. One of the reasons is low costs: undergrads here can find flats for just £480, which is one of the cheapest rates in the country. Plus, social life is affordable too, with £50 being more than enough to go out with friends and grab some drinks.

  • 3 Lancaster

Lancaster ranks third among the best student cities. The town records only 59 crimes per 1,000 residents, meaning students here are about half as likely to run into trouble compared to neighbouring Sheffield or Liverpool. Beyond safety, the city also offers cheap rentals, with rates below £570 monthly. Students at Lancaster University report 84% satisfaction as well, putting it in the top tier across the UK schools.

  • 4 Coventry

Coventry comes next on the list. Most of the students here attend the University of Warwick, ranked 69th globally, which helps explain why 84% of them rate their experience positively. Beyond teaching quality, undergrads coming here won’t have a hard time finding a flat either, with typical apartments listed for around £560. Plus, getting to university is also easier thanks to decent bike lanes and walkable neighbourhoods.

  • 5 Aberdeen

Aberdeen rounds out the top five as Scotland’s best student city. Students here can find an apartment for around £500, cheaper than anywhere in the top five except Sunderland. The Scottish city also stays safer than most English alternatives and gets more sunshine (1,400 hours) than other northern cities, which matters when spending three years somewhere. The University of Aberdeen itself is quite reputable too, with 8 out of 10 graduates recalling their studies positively.

Online tutor firm Edumentors, which commissioned the study, said: “It’s not just Oxford and Cambridge ranking low; London and Edinburgh finish at the bottom too, despite having some of the world’s most famous universities. But UK universities in general offer quality teaching across the board, so opting for budget cities is actually smarter for most students. You get a similar education while having money left over for a proper flat, going out with friends, and enjoying actual student life.”
