Sheffield Adventure Film Festival takes up cathedral residence this weekend

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) returns for its 18th year at the Sheffield Cathedral this weekend (March 15 and 16), showcasing the Best in Adventure Cinema.

The film festival is a headline feature of The Festival of the Outdoors, a month-long event celebrating Sheffield’s unique position as ‘The Outdoor City.’

ShAFF invites attendees to dive into a world of thrilling stories and breathtaking cinematography that will take you around the world from the comfort of Sheffield’s impressive cathedral. With an emphasis on representation, ShaFF will be showcasing 32 films over seven sessions including climbing and mountain films, adventure bites (short films) and Sheffield-made films. With various ticket options catering to different interests and age groups available, ShAFF ensures that everyone can find their perfect adventure on the big screen at great value.

Alongside the seven film sessions comprising the best films from the last year ShAFF attendees can mingle with adventure sports athletes and filmmakers, attend a range of insightful talks, experience live choral music, and explore a range of exhibitions from sponsors such as Patagonia and Rab. The Sheffield Clothing Repair stall will offer a great opportunity to cheaply fix outdoor equipment with an emphasis on sustainability and is always a hit with the many attendees.

Festival organiser Mathew Heason said: “ShAFF has run a number of events in Sheffield Cathedral and we’re very excited to move the festival there this year. The cathedral is a unique space with an outstanding immersive atmosphere and we can’t wait for the public to join us for the 19th edition of the festival.”

Cllr Martin Smith, chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee at Sheffield City Council, added: “It’s great to see the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival back for another year, as this event really celebrates not only Sheffield culture but also adventure sports, which we are rightly known for. As the Outdoor City, Sheffield is the UK’s leading destination for outdoor adventure and city culture wrapped up into one.”

Committed to sustainability, ShAFF encourages attendees to travel via public transport or bicycle, with convenient access from Sheffield’s mainline train station and ample nearby parking for those driving. Although there will not be any official winners from industry judges this year, the public are encouraged to vote for the People’s Choice Award, which is sponsored by Sheffield’s burrito masters, Street Food Chef.

March’s Festival of the Outdoors will also include the Climbing Works International Festival, a bumper edition of the Pollen Market which will include urban canoeing and a skate jam, and a unique cycling event, the Park Hill Uprise:Urban Hill Climb.
