Radio Merseyside bags Paul McCartney’s brand new Liverpool love song exclusive

Sir Paul McCartney’s new single “Days We Left Behind’ debuted in a world exclusive today (26 March) on BBC Radio Merseyside, as well as nationally on Radio 2.

Radio Merseyside received the world exclusive first play of the new track at 2:50pm on The Afternoon Show (2-6pm) today with Lisa Marrey.

The exclusive was announced during the 1pm news on Radio Merseyside after being teased all morning on the station. This meant the people of Merseyside – where you may have heard McCartney and his fellow Beatles hailed from – heard the song before anyone else on the planet.

Meanwhile on BBC Radio 2, Jeremy Vine revealed on his show (12-2pm weekdays) that Trevor Nelson will play the brand-new track on his show (2-4pm weekdays). Radio 2 is the UK’s most listened to radio station with a weekly audience of 12.7m.

McCartney said: “So this next song is like very much a memory song for me. I was doing an interview yesterday and I was thinking, well, songwriters, you know, and writers in general, so what else can you draw on, besides the past? I mean, you can do the present, but still a lot of the past in that.

“So anyway, this is the past. You know, it’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool for me, and that involves…a little bit in the middle about John, Forthlin Road, which is the street I used to live in. And this is where the title of the album, which is The Boys of Dungeon Lane, came from. Dungeon Lane is a place near where I used to live.

“I used to live in a place called Speke which is, you know, working class, quite sort of, you know. It’s only looking back on it, you think, yeah, we didn’t have much at all, but you know as they always say it didn’t matter, because it was like all the people were so great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much. Anyway so…that’s Dungeon Lane is mentioned in the song. Yeah so it’s called ‘Days We Left Behind’.”
