David McCann has been appointed editor of The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland, cementing his leadership after serving in the post on an interim basis since June following the departure of long-serving editor Magnus Llewellin.
McCann is a highly respected journalist with more than two decades of experience across Scotland’s media landscape. He joined The Times as news editor in 2018 and was promoted to deputy editor the following year. During that time, he has helped steer the Scottish editions of both titles through a period of significant political change and digital transformation.
Before joining The Times, McCann held a series of senior roles at some of Scotland’s best-known titles. He was assistant editor and head of news at The Herald and previously worked as assistant news editor at the Daily Record. He began his career at the Edinburgh Evening News.
His promotion to editor comes at a time when Times Media is seeing significant growth across both its digital and audio platforms. The newsbrands – which include The Times, The Sunday Times, Times Radio and the Times Literary Supplement – now reach 12.6 million people per month and boast more than 629,000 digital subscribers. At the 2025 Press Awards, both titles were named Daily and Sunday Newspaper of the Year.
Announcing the appointment, Richard Bogie, managing director of News Scotland, said: “We are thrilled to appoint David as editor. He has a deep understanding of Scotland’s media landscape as well as The Times’ audience. His expertise and insight will help us continue to tell the stories that matter, reaching and reflecting the nation from every angle and every perspective.”
McCann, who will now lead the Scottish editorial team across both print and digital platforms, said: “I’m privileged to be leading the most dynamic newsroom in Scotland. Our journalists consistently unearth agenda-setting stories that ensure our readers are the best informed in the country. From politics to culture to emerging industries, Scotland is a wellspring of inspiring stories and we will continue to put people at the heart of everything we publish.”
McCann takes the helm at a critical time for UK journalism, with news organisations under increasing pressure to innovate in the face of shifting reader habits and commercial realities.
Since launching in 2020, Times Radio has recorded consistent audience growth, with the latest RAJAR figures showing a 23.7% year-on-year rise in reach to 622,000 listeners, and five million listening hours – up 13%. Its content has also reached more than one billion views on YouTube, demonstrating the group’s growing cross-platform presence.
