North East software firm hits 100 headcount

Leading North East AWS software development company, Leighton, is celebrating the growth of its team to 100 colleagues following another year of sustained growth.

The company, which specialises in building software products and optimising processes to accelerate digital transformation for its customers, saw a 31% increase in revenue during the 2024 financial year and is set for another year of record performance at the end of the 2025 financial year with projected growth in the double figures.

The rapid expansion comes alongside its move to new headquarters at Cubo Newcastle, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining headquarters in the North East while supporting its rapidly increasing, hybrid workforce who will be able to take advantage of Cubo’s national network of locations.

James Bunting, CEO at Leighton said: “This transition marks a significant milestone for Leighton, as we continue to invest in an environment where our team and customers can come together to thrive, collaborate and innovate.

“Access to Cubo’s office network across the UK is important to us as it will ensure all of our team will have access to spaces where great work happens, and our culture comes to life. It also reflects our ongoing commitment to retaining a headquarters in the North East and supporting the growing tech sector in the region.”

Among the new starters are a number of senior hires in recent months. North East tech leader, Lee Gilmore has joined the team as principal solutions architect, bringing over two decades of experience with him having previously held roles at the AA, BT, Sage, AO and City Electrical Factors. He has volunteered as an AWS Community Builder for the last four years and was recently recognised by Amazon as an AWS Serverless Hero for 2024, one of only 17 in the UK and one of two in the North of England.

Meanwhile Clare Gledhill has also joined the company as chief consulting officer to lead on the company’s consultancy offering which provides embedded expertise to accelerate project delivery.

Gilmore said: “It’s an incredibly exciting time to be joining Leighton. The team’s dedication to driving its service offering forward and continuing to meet the changing requirements of its clients and the tech sector on a national scale is something to be admired and I’m really excited to be part of that.

“The tech sector in the North East is a growing hub and we’re only going to see more focus, business, and talent around what is already a thriving sector. It’s great to be working with like-minded individuals who are so invested in cultivating and growing the amazing talent already working in the region.”

Leighton specialises in end-to-end custom software delivery and integrating experts within its customers’ companies to bolster internal teams and accelerate project delivery capabilities to ensure project success. Its portfolio of customers includes British Airways, Atom Bank, EQUANS, IAG Loyalty and Greggs.
