A team of female employees from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is hoping to inspire the next generation of female science, technology, engineering & maths (STEM) graduates and workers.

The five NGN customer care officers have signed up to the STEMAZING Inspiration Academy – an initiative designed to help women in STEM roles to shine as visible role models for the next generation.

The participants will all take part in training and workshops to build their confidence before delivering a six-week programme of live online STEM sessions designed to engage and inspire children aged seven-nine years old.

The youngsters will benefit by taking part in hands-on simple STEM activities and experiments to promote their curiosity, creativity and courage.

STEMAZING CEO Alexandra Knight said: “This is the second year that women from NGN have put themselves forward for the academy and we’re delighted to have such inspirational women on board.

“One of the reasons girls don’t consider careers in STEM is because there aren’t enough visible role models out there, so being able to showcase women doing a variety of totally accessible, interesting and rewarding STEM jobs is crucial to raising awareness and generating confidence.”

The announcement of the latest set of STEMspirational women comes at the beginning of National Careers Week, which aims to support young people develop awareness and excitement about their future pathways, this week.

Eileen Brown, NGN Customer Services Director, said: “It’s fitting in National Careers Week to be able to join such a fantastic scheme and hopefully play our part in nurturing STEM careers of the future.

“We’re extremely proud as a business working in a traditionally male-dominated sector to have so many talented female colleagues contributing to our success.”
