musicMagpie co-founder Steve Oliver announced as keynote speaker at Top 75 Tech and eCommerce event

Steve Oliver, the co-founder of Manchester-based tech success story musicMagpie, is to be the keynote speaker at a special Prolific North event to reveal this year’s Top 75 Tech & eCommerce Companies in the North.

The event, which has been sponsored by The Candidate, will take place at Colony Jactin House in Manchester on November 18th.

Oliver co-founded the company – which specialises in refurbished consumer technology – from his garage in 2007, and earlier this year it floated on the Aim stock market with a market cap of £208m.

After an initial focus on DVDs and CDs, musicMagpie has shifted to a model of buying, refurbishing and reselling unwanted gadgets, and is now the UK’s largest phone recycler.

Last month it became the world’s first eBay seller to hit the 10 million feedback milestone.

Oliver, who will be the main speaker at the Top 75 Tech & Ecommerce Companies event, said: “I am delighted to be taking part in Prolific North’s Top 75 event on behalf of musicMagpie.

“Companies in the North West continue to play a leading role in the UK’s technology and e-commerce sectors, and there is a huge amount for us to be collectively proud of. The last 18 months have produced some very significant challenges for businesses across the region, but equally there have been huge opportunities for those who have been innovative, adaptable and flexible enough to grab them.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to come together to celebrate success, share experiences, and assess the outlook for the North West business community’s future.”

The Top 75 ranking, which has been compiled by our independent research partners Mustard, will be a benchmark for the tech and ecommerce sector in the North of England right now.

A wide range of technology figures will come together at the Ancoats venue to network, socialise and hear from Oliver, as well as a second speaker to be announced. They will also get a first look at 2021’s full ranking.

We’re very pleased to be partnering with The Candidate on this year’s event.

Laura Walters, Recruitment Board Director at The Candidate, said: “Having offered recruitment consultancy for Tech & eCommerce businesses for a decade now, many of whom will appear in the list, we wanted to support the recognition and promotion they all deserve.

“We all know how challenging the last 18 months or so has been for employees in all companies, so this year’s list will be a special credit to everyone who helped them achieve their positions.”

The event was last held in November 2019, when key figures from GB Group and Unlimited Brands spoke on a fascinating night for attendees.
