Morning Live’s Helen Skelton censured over social media brand promotion

Helen Skelton, BBC

Morning Live host Helen Skelton has been reprimanded by BBC bosses for plugging brands in connection with the show.

The presenter tagged fashion, jewellery and cake brands on Instagram in photos taken inside the show’s Salford studio, falling foul of BBC guidelines that “no on-air talent should promote products, goods, services or clothing they use.”

The presenter, who also hosts Countryfile and hosts a show on Radio 5, was last week revealed as the new face of Doncaster bathroom retailer Victoria Plum, however as this is outside of her BBC work it is unlikely to cause problems with her employers in the same way as her on-set plugs from Salford.

Fashion brand Dancing Leopard and Jewellery brand Loel & Co are among those to have shared Skelton’s posts, which she has now either removed or detagged and confirmed that she was not paid for the endorsements.

A BBC spokesman said: “Helen pays for the clothes she wears on the show and does not have relationships with the brands tagged. She has now removed brand mentions from social posts linked to the programme.”
