Meet the up-and-coming Hull actor who’s poised for BAFTA Rising Star glory

An up-and-coming actor from Hull has been nominated for the prestigious BAFTA Rising Star Award.

Robert Aramayo, an alumnus of the acclaimed Hull Truck Youth Theatre, has been acclaimed for his powerful performance as Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, MBE, in I Swear.

Aramayo already picked up the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for Best Lead Performance for the role, and yesterday it was revealed he is one of five nominees for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.

The Rising Star Award is the only award at the BAFTAs where the British public can vote. And by voting, you are automatically entered into a prize draw to win two tickets to the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Voting is open now on the BAFTA Rising Star Awards website, and the prize draw to win tickets to the awards ceremony closes on Thursday, February 12, at 12pm midday.

Aramayo may be up for the “rising star” award, but he’s not entirely a newcomer. From 2016 to 2017, he played the role of young Eddard Stark in the sixth and seventh season of the HBO series Game of Thrones. In 2021, he starred in the Netflix psychological thriller miniseries Behind Her Eyes, and since 2022, he has played Elrond in the Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Aramayo’s profile on the BAFTA Rising Star awards website describes him as “a British actor from Hull and a graduate of The Juilliard School

“He stars in Kirk Jones’ film I Swear, inspired by Tourette Syndrome advocate J. Davidson, which premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival and earned him the BIFA for Best Lead Performance. He also appears in Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36, which was shortlisted for Best International Film for the 98th Academy Awards.”

The full list of nominees for the Rising Star Award are:

  • Miles Caton (Sinners)
  • Robert Aramayo (I Swear)
  • Archie Madekwe (Lurker)
  • Posy Sterling (Lollipop)
  • Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another)

The Rising Star Award has been running since 2006. Previous winners include James McAvoy, John Boyega, and Kristen Stewart.
