Liverpool FC have set a new British record for the transfer of a player with the transfer deadline day signing of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports the deal at £130m, while the BBC suggests a more conservative £125m this morning.
Fans across the country are glued to their screens today as the Premier League window prepares to slam shut at 7pm, with the BBC reporting that the deal is done, while specialist website Football365 claims that the Swedish striker “begins media duties before official announcement.”
Earlier in the summer, Liverpool had a £110m offer rejected for Isak, who had angered Newcastle fans by making it clear he was keen on a move to the Merseyside champions.
Fleshing out the details further, Ornstein’s report in The Athletic this morning added: “The deal is worth £130million ($176m) to Newcastle due to solidarity payments and will cost Liverpool £125m. It will set a new Premier League transfer record, surpassing Chelsea’s £106m signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023. Liverpool’s purchase of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer amounted to a total package of £116m, with an initial fee of £100m and £16m in potential bonuses.
“Isak will undergo a medical on Monday before completing his move on a six-year deal.”
Former Sheffield Utd striker-turned-journalist and pundit Jan Age Fjortoft was among the first to report the news, claiming on Saturday that the deal was done, but no official announcement was expected until at least after Newcastle had faced off against Leeds in Saturday’s late kick off.
The Norwegian posted on Twitter that the deal was worth “around £130m.”
Elsewhere in the region on Sky Sports News’ busiest day of the season, Newcastle look to be replacing their big-money departure with a £55m deal for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, Man City are reportedly in advanced talks to sign PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for £30m, with assist wizard Ederson on his way out to Fenerbahce in a £12m deal, and Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign keeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for 21m euros (£18.1m) plus add-ons.
This season’s window looks set to be one of the busiest to date, with around half a billion already spent ahead of today’s annual shopping fiesta.
