Lancashire agency lands Wikimedia UK web redesign and development brief

Lancaster-based creative and digital agency Hotfoot has been appointed by digital giant Wikimedia UK to design and develop its new website following a highly competitive procurement process.

Wikimedia UK is the national charity that supports and grows the UK’s contribution to free knowledge through projects including Wikipedia, and forms part of the global Wikimedia movement.

Its mission, arguably more important in the current era of fake news and social media distribution than ever, is to enable people across the UK to engage with open knowledge and access reliable information, helping them develop their understanding of the world and make informed decisions about the issues that affect them.

Through partnerships with cultural institutions, educators and communities, Wikimedia UK works to share underrepresented knowledge, train contributors, and help ensure the world’s information reflects a broader and more inclusive range of voices, and where possible to do it all for free.

The new website project will focus on creating a more accessible, engaging and user-centred digital experience that strengthens participation, supports volunteering and donations, improves accessibility, and better communicates Wikimedia UK’s impact and mission.

Belvin Tawuya, head of development and communication at Wikimedia UK, said: “Hotfoot impressed us throughout the process with their clear approach, strong understanding of our requirements, and collaborative way of working. We were particularly encouraged by their thoughtful balance of inclusive stakeholder engagement, practical delivery, accessibility, and long-term support.”

The project marks the beginning of a new partnership between the two organisations, with Hotfoot working closely with the Wikimedia UK team to deliver a digital platform that supports the charity’s mission and future growth.

Lancaster-based creative and digital agency Hotfoot, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, works with inspiring charities, cultural organisations and public sector organisations across the UK and beyond, including St John International, the Lake District’s Victoria Wood Theatre, Ordnance Survey, social mobility charity upReach and Hudson Valley Shakespeare.
