A consortium including the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is closing in on a deal to buy around a third of Liverpool Football Club.

Sky News reports that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Anfield club’s controlling shareholder since 2010, could make an official announcement this week, although its sources noted that negotiations could also stretch into next week.

As previously reported, the consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and until recently a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

If completed, the deal would install a trio of the world’s wealthiest individuals as co-owners of one of the most successful teams in the history of English football.

Their investment will reportedly value the club at $6bn, making it one of the sport’s richest-ever deals.

The proposed buy-in comes as footballing finances are in the global spotlight after FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s aborted efforts to sell a stake in the commercial rights of its tournaments, including the men’s World Cup, to a body led by Donald Trump extended family member Joshua Kushner, the brother of the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

That plan, apparently concocted by Infantino behing closed doors without consulting other key FIFA and wider football figures, sparked international outrage, with UEFA threatening to boycott FIFA’s competitions and FAs in Asia and North America also slamming the idea.

Infantino’s future still remains unclear following the backlash, despite receiving a vote of confidence from FIFA bosses, with European governing bodies in particular adamant that Infantino must go for the good of the global game.

Bezos has not previously been linked to any deals in football, while Saverin was part of a consortium that unsuccessfully attempted to take over Chelsea FC during the 2022 auction triggered by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sky’s sources claimed that the deal currently on the table is slightly larger than previously thought, potentially involving a stake of over 30%.

Liverpool last won the Premier League title in 2024-25, but the club faces a season of transition following the sacking of head coach Arne Slot and the loss of popular veteran forward Mo Salah.

FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, acquired Liverpool for £300m in 2010 with the club in a troubled state financially.

A spokesperson for FSG confirmed last month: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

FSG and the prospective new investors have so far declined to comment further on the deal.
