I’m like a biscuit, I want to fly away – Yorkshire Tea brand head honcho is packing his (tea)bags after 18 years

After 18 years at the forefront of tea, Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate strategy and innovation chief Dom Dwight, who has also served as marketing director, head of brand creative, and a host of other roles in his long shift in the kitchen, is throwing in the tea towel and departing the brand.

Announcing his exit on LinkedIn, Dwight began: “Unlike Nelly Furtado, I am not a bird. I’m a biscuit.

“Everyone knows that biscuits, while nice, are made much more interesting when immersed in tea. But too long in the brew and you’re left with a sweet, sludgy mess.”

Moving onto slightly more prosaic information, he continued: “That’s why, after 18 years of being an absolute Yorkshire Tea obsessive for Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate, I’ve finally decided to ‘undunk’ myself.

“It’s hard to put into words how much I’ve loved working for Taylors. It’s a genuinely marvellous company that makes the best products in its field and operates in a way that sets the bar for responsible business.”

Dwight was full of praise for his coworkers and agency partners as he put the kettle on for one last time at the home of some of the most memorable ads and social activity of recent years: “More than that though, it is a collective of excellent humans: the managers that gave me a shot and the room to grow (particular thanks to Andy and Simon), agency partners like Lucky Generals and Goodstuff whose miraculous work gave us a story we could all be proud of, and my brilliantly talented teammates who made what could have been a chore an absolute blast – whether that’s the folks from my early days who long since moved on to other things or the fabulous people that still work there today,” he said.

“I’m excited about the future, but saying goodbye to everyone wasn’t easy. Thank you to all of you for some amazing memories – brewing tea at the edge of the Grand Canyon, chasing One Direction around Yorkshire in an ice cream van, seeing the rolling hills of Rwanda, the mountain coffee farms of Colombia, a million amazing Twitter moments, and meeting a shedload of amazing Yorkshire celebrities. Oh, and so many brass band appearances! The list is as long as it is ridiculous and wonderful.”

The tea supremo added that he doesn’t have his next chapter set up just yet, although he’s open to ideas: “As to what’s next? Well, after nearly two decades working on one of the best brands in the universe, I’m taking some time to think about that,” he concluded. “I’m having lots of great chats and brewing up (not sorry) a fair few plans. If you’re interested to know more, want to run an idea past me, or just want to catch up over tea and biscuits, then give me a shout.”

We wouldn’t be surprised if he heads off for some winter sun to top up on his tannin’ first.
