Match of the Day was disrupted during Wednesday night’s live broadcast after presenter Gabby Logan was forced to leave the programme mid-show due to a “family emergency”.
The programme, which is filmed at dock10 in MediaCity, continued with Mark Chapman stepping in at short notice. It was confirmed on Thursday morning that Logan’s father, former Leeds United and Wales footballer Terry Yorath, had died aged 75 after a short illness.
Speaking on behalf of the family, his children said: “To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man.Our hearts are broken but we take comfort knowing that he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”
Chapman (above), who had been presenting on BBC Radio 5 Live from the same MediaCity complex, was called over around 20 minutes into the programme. Addressing viewers live on air, he said: “So we’ll talk about that game in a moment. Sadly Gabby has got a family emergency that she’s had to rush off and deal with. So she’s gone to do that and I’ve come from the radio to finish the show.”
Logan had opened the show alongside pundits Danny Murphy and Stephen Warnock, covering Bournemouth’s 3–2 win over Tottenham and previewing Manchester City’s 1–1 draw with Brighton, before unexpectedly leaving the studio.
Viewers quickly took to social media to praise Chapman’s calm handover and to send messages of support to Logan, with many highlighting the rarity of a mid-programme presenter change on the long-running BBC show.
Yorath enjoyed a distinguished playing career, most notably at Leeds United, before spells with Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps and Bradford City.
Logan, 52, has previously spoken publicly about family tragedy, including the death of her younger brother Daniel at the age of 15, and more recently about supporting her husband Kenny Logan through prostate cancer treatment.
The BBC has not commented further, but the broadcast continued smoothly from MediaCity following Chapman’s swift on-air switch.
