The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising has launched a new industry qualification designed to support early-career creatives, as president Karen Martin pushes to put creativity back at the centre of agency life.
Announced today, the Creative Essentials Certificate is a new eight-week programme that will run from 20 April to 6 July 2026, targeting creatives at the start of their careers who want practical guidance on developing, pitching and selling ideas.
Rather than focusing purely on theory, the course is built around the realities of agency work. Participants will explore how to develop their own creative voice, understand their role within an agency, and shape ideas that resonate with clients and audiences. The programme also covers pitching, building client relationships and managing long-term career development.

Sessions will be delivered by senior figures from agencies including BBH, Biscuit Filmworks and Wieden & Kennedy, alongside the IPA, and hosted at the IPA and other London creative spaces.
Martin said the qualification is about giving emerging creatives a clearer understanding of both the craft and the purpose of their work. “I’m beyond proud to launch the IPA’s first Creative Essentials Certificate – a programme built to inspire and empower the next generation of creative talent,” she said. “Over eight weeks, we’ll explore what makes great creative work truly great – from the spark of an idea, to crafting compelling pitches, to selling work that moves clients and audiences alike. It’s a chance for early-career creatives to understand not just how to do the job, but why it matters. Creativity is our industry’s superpower, and this course will help you use it to its full potential.”

IPA director general Paul Bainsfair added that the programme reflects a broader shift in priorities under Martin’s presidency. “Karen’s agenda has put creativity firmly back at the heart of the business. And the Creative Essentials Certificate is a brilliant example of that commitment in action, giving the next generation of creatives the skills, confidence and commercial understanding to make their mark,” he said. “For anyone starting out in the business, it’s an unmissable opportunity to learn from the best and build a career on strong creative foundations.”
The move comes as agencies across the UK look to strengthen creative training and retention at junior level, amid concerns about skills gaps and the long-term sustainability of creative careers.
