Football league signs “landmark” television deal

Sky is set to air live football matches during the 3pm blackout, following a new deal with the Preston-based English Football League.

The 24/25 season will be the start of a new 5-year partnership between the 2 organisations, with 1000+ games to be broadcast. That will mean fans will be able to watch their team more than 20 times a season – including every Carabao Cup game.

“For the first time, we will broadcast every game live from across the EFL on the opening weekend,” said Jonathan Licht, Managing Director at Sky Sports.

“It’s going to be a huge moment for football fans up and down the country and is a fitting way to kick off our ground-breaking new partnership with the EFL.”

The uplift in games is due to its new Sky Sports+ offering, which will be launched in August. The new channel and mobile app will be able to show up to 100 events concurrently.

The deal with the EFL is worth £935m over the 5 year deal, that’s comprised of £895m in rights fees, plus £40m in additional marketing benefits. That’s an increase of £60m per season on the current contract.
