First trailer for “high-stakes” Liverpool crime drama The Cage

The BBC has released the first trailer for a new Liverpool crime drama from the writer of The Responder.

Tony Schumacher’s The Cage stars Sheridan Smith as Leanne, a cashier at an inner-city casino, who starts skimming cash from the safe, to secure her family’s future. But when she finds that her boss, played by Michael Socha is doing the same thing, their lives are “set on a collision course” not least from the local gangster they’re stealing from – and the police.

The 5×60 minute show has been produced by Element Pictures (Poor Things, Normal People) and all episodes will be available on the iPlayer from Sunday 26th and air weekly on BBC One.

It’s directed by Al Mackay (Kidnapped, Without Sin) with the whole series shot in and around Liverpool and Merseyside.

“Coming back to the BBC with my second major show and being able to work with such talents as Sheridan, Michael and the teams at Element Pictures and the BBC is such an honour,” said Tony Schumacher.

“On top of that, having a director of Al’s calibre really is the cherry on the big Liverpool drama cake we’re baking together. I’m hoping people will find it funny, dark, but most of all full of love, life and entertainment and I can’t wait for the world to see it.”

Also starring are Barry Sloane (House of the Dragon) as Gary Packer, Geraldine James (Dope Girls) as Nancy Packer, Anton Bibby (Liverpool Narcos) as Thomas Chapel, Freya Jones (Bolan’s Shoes) as Emily Flynn, Sophie Mensah (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale) as Fen, Shaun Mason (Extraordinary) as Alan, Louis Emerick (The Power of Parker) as Paul, Sue Jenkins (Brookside) as Shelagh Flynn, Eileen O’Brien (Not Going Out) as ‘Nanna’ and Mona Goodwin (Extraordinary) as Trace.

Hilary Martin is executive producer for Fremantle with Christopher Aird, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures, alongside Tony Schumacher and Sheridan Smith. Lucy Richer is executive producer for the BBC and Clare Shepherd is the producer.
