The BBC has announced The Players Channel, a new podcast feed for people to find football content on BBC Sounds as the new Premier League season gets underway.
Headlining the new feed’s content on BBC Sounds and 5 Live will be Defoe and Deeney: Football Firsts, presented by former Tottenham, West Ham and England striker Jermain Defoe and former Watford and Birmingham City forward Troy Deeney.
The 12-episode podcast series see the pair recall their footballing first encounters – their first team debut, visiting the manager’s office or first time losing their head.
The pair reveal what life is really like as a Premier League footballer, chatting about some of the funny, interesting and outrageous moments from their careers, whether that’s teammates hammering you after a red card, not recognising the England manager’s number or biting an opponent.
Deeney said: “I reckon myself and Jermain would have made a handy striking partnership on the pitch. It’s a shame we never got to play together but I’m excited that we’re now co-hosting the podcast. I think listeners will be surprised to learn some of things that go on behind the scenes in football so hopefully we can shed some light on some of those funny and interesting first moments you go through as a player.”
Defoe added: “I know that football fans have all wondered what it would be like to make it as a pro, and from experience you end up going through all sorts of moments, some of them you can hardly believe. It’s been fun looking back with Troy on some of those memories and I can’t wait for the listeners to hear some of these stories.”
Also returning on The Players Channel is Footballer’s Football Podcast Series 4. Hosts Callum Wilson and Michail Antonio return to give fans a player’s point of view on the beautiful game. Reflecting on the weekend’s action, discussing the big talking points, and exploring the world around football, they’ll talk to each other about the highs and lows of being an elite player in the greatest league in the world.
Episode 1 of the Footballer’s Football Podcast series 4 is available now on BBC Sounds, with new episodes dropping weekly, while Defoe and Deeney Football Firsts will be available every Thursday starting from August 17 on BBC Sounds.
The Players Channel joins a raft of popular football content on BBC Sounds including Match of the Day: Top 10, Jill Scott’s Coffee Club and Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast.
