Cheshire marketer bags Chinese crane giant brief

Ian Cheveau Marketing (ICM), the Widnes-based construction marketing consultancy, is working with SANY UK, producing video, case studies and photography for the UK business of one of the world’s biggest construction machinery makers.

The first piece is already out: a customer film with John Sutch Cranes, which runs the UK’s biggest SANY mobile crane fleet, shot on a live site in Lymm, Cheshire.

Ian Cheveau, founder of ICM, said: “SANY build some of the best cranes on the market, and UK crane hire firms are only starting to find that out. The proof has to come from the people who use them, on real jobs, not from a brochure. That’s what this film does, and it’s what the rest of the work will do.”

In the film, Paul Parry, sales director at John Sutch Cranes, and his operations team explain why the family firm chose SANY and how the cranes have performed on jobs across the North West and North Wales.

SANY, which builds cranes in Changsha and Huzhou, China, was named the top Chinese construction machinery company in the Forbes Global 2000. In the UK it sells mobile and crawler cranes.

SANY joins a client list that covers most of the built environment.

ICM also built the John Sutch Cranes website, which has brought in £250,000 of enquiries in a matter of months, and ran the firm’s campaign on the rules for moving mobile cranes, now taken up by the Construction Plant-hire Association and with the Home Office, which warranted a visit from the then Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner. It also announced NMT Crane Hire’s £2.3 million, 300-tonne crane in Bedford.

For contractors, ICM handles PR for Leeds main contractor Artium Construction, whose £4 million Brough ground-breaking ran in Place Yorkshire within 48 hours, and for GRS Contractors, where a rebrand and new website have been followed by press for every site start.

In housing, it works with Nantwich family housebuilder Markden Homes, while specialist clients include site welfare firm Kensite, Ainscough Environmental, Liverpool joinery firm CLTK,

multi-discipline construction company MFG Construction and fire safety business Access Fire Risk.

Cheveau is also a director of MukAway, the materials platform from MA EnviroTech Group, and leads its marketing that has been responsible for over 130 construction sign-ups to the platform, including GRAHAM Construction, Barratt Redrow and Wain Homes.

He added: “Most agencies working in construction understand marketing, not construction. I’ve done my site tickets and been on more than 750 site visits, from trenches and site cabins to heavy plant and cranes. I can read a programme and know what’s happening on site and when. Clients can tell the difference. The North builds things. I make sure people hear about it.”

Cheveau was writing for national newspapers at 17 and became a serious news jounalist, then spent around 17 years in construction communications, including at Balfour Beatty and GMI Construction, before founding ICM. He works with a network of freelance photographers, drone pilots, videographers and designers. He is also shortlisted in two categories at this year’s Prolific North Marketing Awards – Marketing Freelancer of the Year and Marketer of the Year.
