Carragher summoned to Sky Sports meeting after spitting incident

Jamie Carragher

Football pundit Jamie Carragher has been summoned for talks with Sky Sports today after being caught on video spitting towards a 14-year-old girl following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United.

The former Liverpool and England defender, who is reported to be paid more than £1 million a year by the broadcaster, apologised on Sunday evening for the incident via Twitter. However, a spokesperson for Sky described his actions as “unacceptable”.

The incident followed Saturday’s lunchtime match at Old Trafford and was caught on mobile phone and obtained by the Daily Mirror, which splashed with the story on its front page this morning.

The other driver, who filmed the footage, repeatedly shouted the 2-1 score to Carragher, who is heard to say, “All right”, before winding down his window and spitting towards the other car. The video ends with the daughter of the other driver, who was sat in the passenger seat, saying Carragher’s spit had hit her in the face.

In a tweet on Sunday night Carragher wrote: “Totally out of order & Ive apologised personally to all the family this evening. I was goaded 3/4 times along the motorway while being filmed & lost my rag. No excuse apologies.”

However, a spokesperson for the channel said: “It’s unacceptable behaviour and we will be addressing it with Jamie.” Carragher was due to front Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme for the Stoke v Manchester City game, but that will now depend on the outcome of today’s meeting.

Carragher has been a Sky Sports pundit alongside Gary Neville after retiring from the game in 2013. He is also a columnist for the Daily Mail.
