Coronation Street favourite Carla Connor will return to Weatherfield this Christmas following a 19-month absence.

The character, played by Alison King, left the soap in May 2016 for a new life in Devon. Producer Kate Oates has confirmed that King has signed a contract to return and that her character will ‘break new ground’.

“Ali has only just signed her contract and she’ll be back around Christmas,” Oates told Radio Times.

“It’s time to break new ground with Carla. I didn’t want to put her on that familiar cycle of self-destruction, recovery, followed by more self-destruction.

“What we’ll have instead are these two strong Connor women – Carla and Michelle – on opposing sides and in conflict for a change. It’ll be a refreshing dynamic for us to see.

Since arriving on Coronation Street in December 2006, Connor had many memorable storylines, enduring a battle with alcoholism, a horrific rape and a kidnap.

During her time away from the soap, Connor pursued other acting projects and spent more time with her daughter Daisy.
