Photographer Dan Root has completed a 360 degree photographic project to bring some of Oldham’s civic buildings to life on Google Streetview.
Commissioned by Oldham Council, the pictures allow you to take a virtual tour of the Old Town Hall, Oldham Library and Chadderton Town Hall amongst others.
“The Old Town Hall is a magnificent building and it was great to be given the chance to photograph inside because its architecture is stunning. Not many people will have seen the interior of the building since it closed years ago so I’m sure they’ll enjoy looking around and it may even bring back a few memories,” said Middleton-based Root.
“It is great news that the Council are bringing the Old Town Hall back into use and it will be a pleasure to return and take photographs when the work is complete.”
The building is about to be turned into a cinema and leisure complex.
Root is part of a network of Google-trusted photographers, trained to take street view imagery for its Maps service.
“This project allows you to navigate around these buildings and see what it is actually like inside. For example, you can have a look around the library in Failsworth Town Hall or if you are thinking of getting married you can even check out the ballroom at Chadderton Town Hall and see that it could be the ideal venue for your big day,” added Root.
For the leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Jim Mahon, it was more than just showing that the borough was “keen to embrace new technology”:
“More importantly though it showcases some of the magnificent and historic buildings the Borough possesses and also the facilities available inside them. In the case of the Old Town Hall it also highlights how we are working with our regeneration partners to bring one of the Borough’s most iconic buildings back into use as a place families want to visit.”
