Tributes have been paid to a former Daily Post journalist who covered Wrexham AFC for three decades.
Mark Currie, who suffered from Motor Neurone Disease, was admitted to hospital with respiratory problems last week and died on Thursday morning. He was 68.
Paying tribute, Wrexham club director Spencer Harris said: “As well as being a reporter, Mark was a genuine fan and he was willing to give his opinion on the club’s running irrespective of whether or not it was popular. I have great respect for him for that.
“Although he could be passionate with his views, they were also driven by the need to get the best outcome for the club he supported.”
Mark, who leaves wife Jan and children Owen, Gareth and Bethan, started his journalism career on the Wrexham Leader in 1974 and also had spells on the Derby Evening Telegraph and Wolverhampton Express and Star before joining the Daily Post’s business desk in 1988.
He went on to cover Wrexham until his retirement, and it’s thought he had not missed a home game since the early 1980s.
Andy Gilpin, who worked with Mark on the Daily Post for years, said: “I’ll remember Mark as someone who had good friends and contacts in all aspects of his field, whether from his time as a business journalist or when he was the Daily Post’s chief football writer.
“He was someone who was good at his job, loved a pint, but loved his family more and was immensely proud of his children. In life, that’s more than enough for any man.
“Goodbye Mark. They simply don’t make them like you any more.”
