Sheffield agency’s 400,000 photos to add diversity to AI

An international commission to take 400,000 photos across 6 countries and 11 cities in 3 months has been completed by Cultura Creative.

The Sheffield-based tech company coordinated the brief to create representative visual datasets to help AI recognise and understand the diversity of the real world more accurately.

“Artificial intelligence is only ever as good as the data it learns from. If that data isn’t representative of society, AI systems can unintentionally reinforce bias and exclusion,” explained founder, Christina Vaughan.

The company specialises in producing photography and video, to create the multimodal visual datasets used to train artificial intelligence and machine learning systems.

Vaughan set up the female-led firm, having previously established Image Source, which went on to become one of the world’s leading image libraries with offices in London, Cologne, New York and Los Angeles.

The Sheffield-born entrepreneur has now turned her attention to AI, aiming to improve its accuracy, fairness and inclusivity.

“South Yorkshire has the talent, universities and entrepreneurial spirit to become a globally recognised centre for ethical AI innovation,” she continued.

“We’re proving that world-class AI infrastructure doesn’t have to be built in Silicon Valley – it can be created here in Sheffield while working with partners across the world.”
