From Cumbria to Wichita – Northern ‘influencer’ crowned one of the best in the world

He launched it from Cumbria before luxury travel blogging even existed. Twenty years later, the US has just crowned him one of the best in the world.

Paul Johnson, the editor behind A Luxury Travel Blog, has been named Best Niche Voice in Travel at the prestigious TBEX Summit in the United States.

The award lands as Johnson marks the 20th anniversary of the site he launched in 2005 from his home in Cumbria – long before “influencer” became a job title and years ahead of the curve for digital travel publishing. What began as a personal experiment has since grown into one of the world’s most influential luxury travel platforms, read by millions of affluent travellers seeking the finest experiences across the globe.

Johnson was able to collect the award in person at the summit in Wichita, where he was also shortlisted for the overall Best Travel Blog prize — a double recognition that cements his status as a leading independent voice in global travel media.

“Winning this award in the US, especially as we mark 20 years of the blog, is a proud moment,” he said. “When I started the site in 2005 from my home in Cumbria, the landscape of travel media was completely different. To still be at the forefront of the industry two decades later—and to bring this recognition home to Cumbria—is incredibly rewarding.”

A Luxury Travel Blog was the first travel blog in the world to focus exclusively on the luxury sector. Over the past two decades, Johnson has not only navigated the rapid evolution of the internet but outlasted many traditional travel publications — retaining independence while building authority in a fiercely competitive space.

The site has previously picked up Best Travel Blog at the Travelmole Web Awards and Best Travel Influencer from Wired Magazine, and has been described as “one of the world’s best travel blogs” and “best for luxury” by The Telegraph. Johnson’s work has also been featured by the BBC, CNN Travel and the New York Times.

Despite its global reach — covering everything from private islands to sustainable high-end tourism — the operation remains firmly rooted in South Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. Johnson continues to run the site from there, balancing international travel with a distinctly northern base.

That travel has been wide-ranging. Recent years alone have taken him from Kendal to Kazakhstan, and as far north as Kangerlussuaq in Greenland. Along the way, he has worked with airlines, luxury hotels and resorts, tourist boards and automotive brands — bobsledding in Austria, swimming with penguins in the US, running a half marathon in Turkey and sailing a 46-ft yacht around the Greek islands.

He has also spoken at major industry events including World Travel Market in London and MALT Congress in Abu Dhabi, building a combined social media audience of more than 1.2 million followers.
