Coronation Street issues warning over cruel social media scam targeting fans

Coronation Street bosses have issued a stark warning to fans after learning scammers are once again targeting loyal viewers online.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the ITV soap revealed that individuals pretending to represent the show’s casting department have been approaching unsuspecting members of the public via social media, a tactic also believed to be targeting fans of sister show Emmerdale.

The official Corrie account said: “We are aware that there are some accounts impersonating the Casting department at Coronation Street on social media platforms. Our Casting team only uses official methods of communication, this does not involve direct messages on Twitter or any other social media. Please be careful when communicating online and report any concerns to the relevant platform.”

It’s the latest in a series of online impersonation attempts linked to ITV’s flagship soaps. Back in January, both Coronation Street and Emmerdale issued a joint warning after learning scammers were posing as cast members to request money from fans.

At the time, a shared statement read: “Please be aware that actors from both Coronation Street and Emmerdale are currently being impersonated by scammers across all social media platforms. No cast member will ever directly request money for messages, meetings or any kind of personal interaction on social media.

“We are aware these sophisticated impersonations can include deep-fake footage (where it appears to be the actor talking but isn’t) and personal messages which seem to be realistic and in character. We urge everybody to be vigilant. Please report any concerns to the relevant platform.”

They added: “The legitimate way of meeting with real members of the cast is via official ‘meet and greet’ events run by ITV Star Tours.”

The warning comes ahead of a major soap milestone. Early next year, Coronation Street and Emmerdale will come together for a historic crossover episode – the first time the two soap worlds have collided officially.

It will coincide with a new ‘power hour’ scheduling pattern launching in 2026, which will see both shows air back-to-back from 8pm Monday to Friday, trimming one episode per week from each show.
