Manchester traveltech platform Transfer Travel, a specialist in travel resale, has appointed Carl Carter, current CEO of CSC Global Partners and former MD at IMG Europe, as its new strategic advisor.
Carter brings over 30 years of insurance industry expertise. He has led on business strategy, product innovation, and multi-channel distribution, working across 40+ countries to develop bespoke insurance solutions.
The move comes as Transfer Travel is expanding its team to meet rising demand. More insurance companies are actively seeking solutions to resell cancelled bookings, rather than accepting total losses on claims.
With travel disruptions on the rise and consumer demand for flexibility at an all-time high, the travel insurance industry faces mounting pressure to modernise and reduce claims costs. Unlike motor insurance, where companies can recover costs by selling salvaged parts from written-off vehicles, travel insurers traditionally have no way to salvage losses when holidays are cancelled. They simply pay out the claim and absorb the entire cost.
Transfer Travel is bridging this gap by leveraging technology to make cancelled travel arrangement resale a viable solution, introducing greater flexibility into the claims process. By enabling travel insurers to easily resell non-refundable bookings, losses are reduced on cancellation claims while offering policyholders immediate alternatives to traditional reimbursement. This benefits claimants further, as insurers often waive the excess to incentivise the claimant.
“The insurance sector must embrace digital innovation to remain competitive and meet evolving consumer needs,” said Carter. “Transfer Travel’s technology offers a compelling opportunity for travel insurers to reduce claim losses while improving customer satisfaction.”
He added: “This is a major cost containment opportunity for travel insurers worldwide.”
Maisie Blewitt, head of commercial at Transfer Travel, added: “Carl’s deep insurance industry knowledge will be invaluable as we expand our travel insurance sector partnerships. Our mission is to make travel booking resale as straightforward as the original purchase, and working with insurers is key to achieving this at scale.”
To support this, Transfer Travel plans to launch an API later this year to transform how insurers handle travel claims. This API will enable insurers to integrate resale options directly into the claims process. Not only will this streamline operations but it will also allow insurers to slash payouts, which will significantly reduce overall costs.
