Students at Unity Radio’s New Talent Academy are to be given the chance to broadcast their own live radio show as part of their course.

The students will be invited to host their own show on the youth-focused urban and dance music station, which is based at MediaCityUK in Salford.

The show will be broadcast every Thursday from 10am to 1pm for the next six weeks as part of a unique training provision.

Unity Radio, which launched in 2001 when founder Jon Green set up a pirate radio station in Moss Side with friends Wesley Milne and Robert Hargreaves, works with the local community to offer creative opportunities.

James Bayat, the New Talent Academy’s Education Coordinator, said: “We wanted to offer a provision that is unique in Greater Manchester; providing accredited learning in a living, breathing workplace, creating first-hand experience in abundance, meaning learners are already closer to further education, training and employment.

“We aim to develop the necessary skills to give them the confidence to keep moving forward.”

The New Talent Academy is currently providing accredited Creative Media courses for Trafford and Manchester residents.

Bayat added that it was a “fantastic opportunity for young people to come to a place that provides both learning of new skills and a source of confidence for young people”.
