That will include United’s recently launched MUTV app, a subscription based-app for the club’s television channel which will give fans in 165 countries the chance to watch matches live.

He will also manage the creation and editorial oversight of United’s official matchday programme and monthly magazines, as well as the club’s digital media partnerships and direct-to-consumer products.

At Yahoo, Lynch ran more than 3,500 content partnerships across all areas and played a key role in developing Yahoo’s live sports offering by agreeing broadcast rights deals with the likes of the NFL, NHL, MLB and PGA Tour.

Group MD Richard Arnold said: “Phil’s appointment is an important step in the evolution of our digital strategy. He has a wealth of experience at Yahoo and Sony Digital that will add real value and insight to our thinking.”

Prior to Yahoo, Lynch was senior VP, digital networks and games, for Sony.
