TransPennine’s charity champion and 55k-subscriber YouTube star retires from the tracks

After more than two decades at the controls – and raising more than £80,000 for charity – a TransPennine Express (TPE) train driver and unlikely influencer has retired after a 22-year long career.

Alongside his work on the tracks, Don Coffey, from Chapel-en-le-Frith became a familiar face to rail enthusiasts through his hugely popular YouTube channel, which attracted tens of thousands of followers, with his Driver’s Eye clips of some of his favourite routes a particular hit with viewers.

Coffey donated all his earnings from the channel – more than £80,000– with Samaritans being the main beneficiary, receiving more than £50,000.

He set off on his final service from Huddersfield on Monday 6 October arriving at Manchester Piccadilly station at 1:37pm with wife Elaine by his side in the driver’s cab.

He was met by family, friends and colleagues who gathered to celebrate the end of an era for one of TPE’s most well-known and loved figures.

Coffey began his railway journey in 2003 as a driver with Northern before stepping into management in 2010.

He joined TPE in 2013 as a driver, where he spent the next 12 years inspiring colleagues and supporting customers.

During that time, he was recognised at TPE’s Shining Star Awards in 2024, where he was crowned Driver of the Year, and also received the prestigious Richard Hope Award at the Rail Business Awards earlier this year for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Reflecting on his retirement, Coffey said: “It’s been an incredible journey. I’ve always believed that the railway is about people, community and purpose.

“The support from colleagues, viewers and everyone who’s backed our charitable efforts has meant more than I can say.

“Now I’m really looking forward to the next chapter — especially being able to spend more time with my wife and family.”

Chris Jackson, managing director for TPE, said: “Don’s contribution to TPE and the wider rail industry has been outstanding.

“From his dedication on the tracks to his tireless charity work, he has set an example that embodies the very best of our railway family.

“On behalf of everyone at TPE, I want to thank Don for everything he has given — he will be truly missed, and we wish him all the very best in his retirement.”

While the experienced driver is stepping back from the cab, he won’t be disappearing from the railway community altogether as he plans to continue sharing his passion through his ever popular YouTube channel.
