The Sentinel newspaper is set to be awarded the Freedom of Stoke-on-Trent alongside the city’s most famous pop son, Robbie Williams.

The honour comes as the paper celebrates its 160th anniversary. Writing at the paper’s website today, editor Richard Bowyer said they were ‘delighted’.

“As the 13th editor of The Sentinel, I would like to thank the council. I am proud to receive this award, not only on behalf of today’s employees, but for all those who have worked throughout history to produce this paper.

“Not a day goes by when I do not feel privileged to hold the title of Editor of The Sentinel.

“This award is for our community work. We will continue to scrutinise and challenge the council’s decisions on behalf of our readers but also celebrate the council’s achievements.”

Over the years, The Sentinel has also hosted a series of annual award ceremonies, including the Business Awards and Our Heroes as well as The Sentinel’s Sports Personality of the Year.

The Freedom of the City honour is set to be approved at a meeting on March 20. The same honour is also expected to be approved for pop star Robbie Williams.
