Steph McGovern celebrated her birthday yesterday with the unveiling of a blue plaque at Leeds Dock celebrating the ‘inclusivity and diversity’ of her weekday show Steph’s Packed Lunch.

The plaque was revealed by Martin Hamilton from the Leeds Civic Trust who said: “Steph, your contribution to broadcasting and culture in the city of Leeds is absolutely immense. You’ve turned Leeds Dock into a Hollywood Boulevard… famous people, public figures coming on the show and underpinned by your excellent journalism. We wanted to mark this… Today we have a special plaque just for you.”

The plaque reads: “Steph’s Packed Lunch brought live daytime television to the city on 14th September 2020. Hosted by Steph McGovern, a proud Northerner passionate about helping real people tell their stories, the production employs many local people offering some their first role in TV. The show provides a commitment to broadcasting in Yorkshire, with a focus in inclusivity and diversity.”

McGovern in turn paid tribute to the team on the show. She said: “It’s not just me, it’s everyone, the whole gang that make the show, it’s definitely not just me… I couldn’t do it without everyone here, the lunchmates are the people who bring so many amazing things to this show… And the contributors, not just the celebs, but the people who come onto the show, ‘ordinary’ people with extraordinary stories, they’re the people who make it. I just turn up!”

The plaque wasn’t the only surprise present for the lunchtime star as she celebrated turning 41 – she also had shark named after her at a North East aquarium and a mural painted in her honour along a Leeds canal.
