South Yorkshire ‘non-techy-types’ invited to leave their comfort zone

Barnsley DMC MakerLab

South Yorkshire business people are invited to an open evening to see how digital tools like 3D printers and laser cutters could help them improve products and develop new ways of working.

The event at the MakerLab on Barnsley’s Digital Campus, The Seam on Wednesday September 28th between 4pm and 8pm will feature expert demonstrations of digital equipment and ‘have-a-go’ opportunities.

The MakerLab’s dedicated tech support team from Barnsley-based BrightBox will ensure everything is accessible to visitors whatever their level of technical skill or knowledge.

DMC manager Tracey Johnson said: “We’d particularly like ‘non-techy’ business owners to step out of their comfort zone and into our creative makerspace at this open event. The MakerLab is for everyone and we want people who don’t think of themselves as having much technical know-how to come and see what they could achieve here. Our message is ‘don’t be afraid, our MakerLab facilities and support team are here for you.’”

The MakerLab, opened at DMC 02 six months ago, is financed as part of the region’s ERDF-funded Digital Innovation for Growth (DIfG) programme delivered in partnership with Barnsley Council and Sheffield Hallam University. It is open to eligible SMEs across South Yorkshire, as well as Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Bolsover and Bassetlaw.

Brightbox technicians can provide up to 12 hours of free one-to-one support for entrepreneurs and business owners wanting to explore new technologies at the MakerLab. They also deliver a programme of free workshops and short programmes.

Businesses using the MakerLab may be able to gain further support through academics at Sheffield Hallam University for more in-depth research and development support, or IoT Engine, another partner organisation, for specialist support in Internet of Things developments.
