BBC Radio Manchester has released a World Cup single ahead of England’s quarter final against Norway this weekend.
“Where’s the World Cup At?” is a football-themed reimagining of the 1980 Salford Jets record “Who You Looking At?” – with a newly recorded soundtrack and, naturally, World Cup-themed lyrics.
The song is performed by former Salford Jets frontman and BBC Radio Manchester’s daytime presenter, Mike Sweeney.
He’s joined by Breakfast host Joe McGrath as well as listeners from across the region.
The song and accompanying video features cameos from the likes of Clint Boon, Bez and Hacker T Dog.
“Football and music bring people together and have been a huge part of my life since I can remember. They are my two biggest passions. So, it has been wonderful to hear a song released back in 1980 being brought back to life and be part of it,” said Sweeney.
“BBC Radio Manchester has the best listeners, and I’ve loved that they’ve created something special. I can’t believe we have pulled this off so quickly and it will be ready for Saturday’s game. And who knows, instead of singing ‘it’s coming home’ perhaps Radio Manchester fans will be chanting ‘Where’s the World Cup At?’.”
The video will be available across BBC Radio Manchester’s social media, with a special broadcast on tonight’s North West Tonight. Fans can also listen to it on BBC Sounds.
Live radio commentary of the England v Norway match will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds, presented by Mark Chapman in Miami.
