Rockstar Games delays release of Grand Theft Auto VI until 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI has been further delayed by Rockstar Games, which has pushed back release for another 6 months.

Rockstar Games is based in the US, with Edinburgh’s Rockstar North, the home of the franchise.

In a short statement, the games company said:

“Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.

“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realise has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.

“We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City.”

Rockstar Games is owned by Take-Two, which confirmed the news during its financial results call yesterday.

The parent company stated that it remained “both excited and confident they will deliver an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience.”

Take-Two also told Variety that the delay wasn’t related to the recent firings of approximately 30-40 employees at Rockstar Games in Scotland.

Those were described last week as a “calculated attack on workers” by Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain:

“Rockstar has just carried out the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry. This flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry,” stated Alex Marshall, IWGB President says:

“Despite this calculated attack on workers organising for a collective voice and to improve their difficult working conditions, the Rockstar Union remains undeterred. They will keep organising for respect and better conditions whilst continuing to pour their blood, sweat and creativity into games that are loved by millions.

“The IWGB will pursue every legal claim possible to ensure our members are reinstated and receive interim relief.”

At the time Take-Two said that the firings weren’t related to plans by staff to unionise, a spokesperson said:

“Last week, we took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies.

“This was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities.”

GTA 6 was originally scheduled for released this Autumn, having been in development for more than 10 years.
