The board of the BBC has confirmed that nations director Rhodri Talfan Davies will act as interim director-general when outgoing director-general Tim Davie stands down on 2 April, until a new, permanent director-general starts.
Talfan Davies will join the BBC Board from 1 February as an executive director, a position he will continue to hold when he takes over as interim director-general on 3 April. In addition, Rhuanedd Richards will continue as interim nations director through this period.
In a note to staff, BBC chair Samir Shah said: “There will be a time to celebrate Tim and thank him for his extraordinary contribution to the BBC nearer his departure date. Until then, Tim continues to lead the corporation through this critical period as we prepare our response to the government’s consultation on its Green Paper on the future of the BBC Charter.”

Turning to Talfan Davies’ appointment, he added: “He is an outstanding leader who brings deep editorial experience and a passionate commitment to the power of public service broadcasting to reach and represent audiences across all parts of the UK. I know you will give him your support.”
Tim Davie resigned on 9 November last year alongside BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness in a surprise double resignation following a period of intense political pressure for the BBC’s leadership over Panorama’s editing of a Donald Trump speech and criticism of the broadcaster’s coverage of trans issues.
Davie said at the time: “While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision. Overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as director general I have to take ultimate responsibility.
“Our organisation is a critical ingredient of a healthy society, as well as a thriving creative sector. We should champion it, not weaponise it…I will always be a passionate cheerleader for civilised society, a strong BBC and a thriving UK.”
The process to appoint a new Director-General of the BBC is currently ongoing.
