Record-breaking nature reserve gets new identity from Studio Walden

Studio Walden is behind the new identity of the Tarras Valley nature Reserve in Scotland.

The 10,000 acres of land has been transferred from private to public ownership, having raised in excess of £3m of funding, to “reinvigorate” the economy of Langholm and become Britain’s most ambitious rewilding project.

Cumbria-based Studio Walden was approached in 2021 to create a “harmonious” new identity for this project, to change perceptions of not just the reserve but also the understanding of the area both locally and nationally.

It was briefed to come up with a brand that had “the feel ‘of the community’ yet distinctly new.”

“This was an enormous project, bigger than anything I had tackled before. I hope it can stand to inspire other private-to-public buy-out schemes in years to come,” explained Vincent Walden, who runs Studio Walden from his shared attic studio in Carlisle.

The project covered signage, social media, vehicle graphics, uniform and merchandise.

The final logo is a representation of the valley at sunrise with its namesake river (River Tarras) flowing through the middle.
