Photos of Spencer Tunick’s naked ‘Sea of Hull’ to be shown in April

Photos from Spencer Tunick’s Sea of Hull event – the largest nude installation in the UK – will form the centrepiece of an exhibition at the Ferens Art Gallery in April.

Sea of Hull received worldwide attention when more than 3,200 participants from across the world painted their naked bodies blue under the direction of the artist in the city last summer.

The photographs will be shown during the SKIN exhibition at the Ferens in April, alongside works by Lucian Freud and Ron Mueck. The exhibition, which will take place between Saturday 22 April and Sunday 13 August 2017, will examine how the nude continues to fascinate and inspire artists.

Tunick said: “On a scouting trip in 2015 I visited the Ferens Gallery and took note of various colors of blue from different works in their collection of maritime paintings. I recreated these colors with body paint.

“By bringing the colors of the Ferens’ canvases into the streets and onto the bodies I was able to successfully realize my vision of recreating the lost waterways of Hull with the brilliant and vibrant colors of the water.”

Kirsten Simister, Curator of Art at Ferens Art Gallery, said: “The idea for SKIN was developed at the time of the bid for UK City of Culture and it’s incredibly exciting to see this vision now becoming a reality.

“SKIN acts as a major centrepiece for the year and through a variety of partnerships we have secured works of the very highest quality. We hope to attract new audiences building on the success of the Hockney and Warhol exhibitions we staged prior to our refurbishment and since the reopening in January.

“SKIN particularly resonates with one of the UK City of Culture’s themes, Freedom. What is freedom if not to be at home in one’s own body?”
