North East production house Wander has released the third episode of its YouTube digital series UNTHINKABLE, continuing its commitment to bold first-person survival storytelling built for a digital audience.
Available from 4pm today (Wednesday 25 February) on the Wanderland YouTube channel, the latest instalment of the doc series tells the story of Jonathan Bamber, a mountaineer and Professor of Glaciology at the University of Bristol, whose life changed forever on 2nd September 1992.
While attempting to summit an unclimbed peak in the Himalayas, Bamber’s expedition took a sudden and catastrophic turn. Days from civilisation and high above the valley floor, he was left critically injured in one of the most remote environments on Earth.
What followed was a fight for survival that stretched far beyond the mountain itself. Emergency treatment overseas was only the beginning. The true battle would unfold over the coming years, forcing Jonathan to confront the possibility that his life, and the identity he had built around movement and endurance, might never be the same again.
UNTHINKABLE is Wander’s self-funded digital series, produced, filmed and edited entirely in-house. Each episode centres on a single voice and lived experience, crafted for a YouTube audience that seeks authenticity and emotional depth.
Reflecting on the events in the film, Bamber said: “Very occasionally there can be moments or events that happen when you realise how fragile, delicate and fleeting life actually is. It was one of those moments, something totally unexpected, that makes me value and cherish every extra hour, day and month I have on this beautiful planet.”
Chloë Clover, co-founder and CEO of Wander added: “Jonathan’s story shows the emotional depth at the heart of UNTHINKABLE. Each film explores how people respond when life takes an unimaginable turn. The series is part of our wider strategy to create platform-first factual formats and develop original IP.”
Wander was recently selected for phase one of the BBC Digital Accelerator programme, delivered in partnership with North East Screen, which supports ambitious digital production companies in the North East. The programme provides investment and strategic development support to scale original digital IP.
With UNTHINKABLE, Wander continues to strengthen its position within the UK’s evolving digital production landscape, developing digital formats with broadcast-level production values.
